WHAT ARE INJECTABLE FILLERS?
Injectable fillers are semi-permanent injectable treatments used in facial rejuvenation and contouring. The fillers are hyaluronic acid, with variation of cross-linking (thickness) depending on where the target area is.
The use of injectable fillers began decades ago with fat transfer, then lip augmentation with first permanent fillers. Then with the advent of hyaluronic acid, and the popularity of cosmetic treatment, they have become a common technique of facial rejuvenation. As we age we lose volume in our face. This is due to a loss of sub-cutaneous fat, muscle and bone, and exacerbaged by decreased skin elasticity. Precise, conservative and judicious replacement may provide subtle, but effective results.

The use of injectable or dermal fillers (hyaluronic acid) to address the face may be considered as an early alternative to surgical options. In conjunction with preventative anti-aging treatments they may be an effective non-surgical treatment option. In our clinic we may consider injectable fillers for facial areas where there is a loss of elasticity in the skin and soft tissue, a loss of volume, and sagging caused by the ageing effects of gravity. We also believe that filler treatment can often be done poorly. You should only trust your face to an expert with training and experience, and an intimate knowledge of facial structure.
THE PROCEDURE
Dr Mooney (upon request) or one of his experienced and highly trained cosmetic nurses will perform your treatment. After addressing your concerns and personal goals, other medical issues and a thorough examination, we will draw up a treatment plan specifically designed for you. Temporary fillers such as hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring product in your body may be considered. Many of these come with a built in analgesic effect which can reduce the pain of the procedure. Occasionally, local anaesthetic can also be used to numb particular areas if you may be sensitive or worried about injections.
In our clinic we are meticulous about adhering to guidelines for patients, with thorough consent process, observe cooling off periods, aim for realistic safe and conservative outcomes and are forever mindful of the potential risks and complications of hyaluronic acid injections. We are trainied and prepared for any issues that may arise following treatment.
INJECTABLE TREATMENTS.
There are two main groups of injectable treatments: muscle relaxants and fillers. Muscle relaxants are best used to treat dynamic lines -those that appear when the associated muscle group is used. Most commonly used in the upper 1/3 of face they can reduce lines around the eyes, and in the forehead. These treatments can be used in conjunction with fillers to replace volume lost with the passage of time in the face. Precise treatment of fillers can return lost contour and appearance.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Injectable fillers are usually visible instantly, however depending on the product used and goal some treatments may take 2-3 sessions to achieve the final result. Also dependent upon the product used top up sessions may or may not be required. Some of the initial plumping you may experience will be due to swelling. It is common when there is multiple injection sites that you may experience some swelling and bruising in the first few days post treatment. In non-smokers bruising is rare. To minimise swelling, patients are advised to continue icing the sites and are advised not to exercise or consume alcohol immediately after treatment. Patients should avoid smoking, aspirin, vitamin E, anti-inflammatories, herbal supplements and other medications that promote bruising. Arnica cream is encouraged post operatively. If you are considering facial filler treatment please feel free to contact our clinic for pre-treatment tips to reduce the possibility of bruising. Muscle relaxants take between 2-7 days to achieve results, and sometimes repeat treatments are needed to satisfactorally treat significant lines.
In order to fine tune the results additional follow-up treatments may be necessary. Working in conjunction with the patient Dr Mooney prefers to give his patients a more natural look when using fillers and then build upon the treatments as the patient adjusts to their outcome and provides their feedback and direction.
