WHAT ARE INJECTABLE FILLERS?
Injectable fillers are semi-permanent or permanent injectable treatments used in facial rejuvenation and contouring.
The use of injectable fillers began a decade ago with lip augmentation, but now has become a staple of facial rejuvenation. As we age we lose sub-cutaneous fat – the “plumpness” of our twenties. Precise, conservative but effective replacement can provide subtle, but amazing results.
The use of injectable or dermal fillers to rejuvenate the face is often called “The Liquid Facelift” and is being used today by many men and women as an early alternative to surgical options. In conjunction with preventative anti-aging treatments they can be a very effective non-surgical treatment option. In our clinic we use injectable fillers for facial areas where there is a loss of elasticity in the skin and soft tissue, a loss of volume, and sagging caused by the ageing effects of gravity. We also believe that filler treatment is often done poorly. You should only trust your face to an expert with training and experience, and an intimate knowledge of facial structure to give you a natural, fresh result.
Dr Mooney (upon request) or one of his experienced and highly trained cosmetic nurses will perform your treatment. After addressing your concerns and personal goals, other medical issues and a thorough examination, we will draw up a treatment plan specifically designed for you. Temporary fillers such as hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring product in your body or permanent longer lasting fillers may be considered. Many of these come with a built in analgesic effect so that the injection is virtually a pain free procedure. Occasionally, local anaesthetic can also be used to numb particular areas if you may be sensitive or worried about injections. Our treatments are simple and safe, and we usually find “first-timers” surprised at how easy and non-traumatic it was.
Treatments can be used in conjunction with fillers to relax the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles and furrows. Precise treatment of fillers creates a more youthful contour and appearance. Subtle lip or cheek contouring can produce amazing results and beautifully enhance your facial features. Depending on the number of injection sites and the injectables used treatment can take as little as 30 minutes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Injectable fillers are usually visible instantly, however depending on the product used and goal some treatments may take 2-3 sessions to achieve the final result. Also dependent upon the product used top up sessions may or may not be required. Some of the initial plumping you may experience will be due to swelling. It is common when there is multiple injection sites that you may experience some swelling and bruising in the first few days post treatment. In non-smokers bruising is rare. To minimise swelling, patients are advised to continue icing the sites and are advised not to exercise or consume alcohol immediately after treatment. Patients should avoid smoking, aspirin, vitamin E, anti-inflammatories, herbal supplements and other medications that promote bruising. Arnica cream is encouraged post operatively. If you are considering facial filler treatment please feel free to contact our clinic for pre-treatment tips to reduce the possibility of bruising.
In order to fine tune the results additional follow-up treatments may be necessary. Working in conjunction with the patient Dr Mooney prefers to give his patients a more natural look when using fillers and then build upon the treatments as the patient adjusts to their new look and provides their feedback and direction.

Expect to spend about 45 minutes to an hour with Dr William Mooney for a thorough injectable consultation.
You will first be greeted by Dr Mooney’s receptionists, they will ask you to fill in a form with basic details.
This is followed by a formal consultation with Dr William Mooney.
There are four pillars of Dr Mooney and Face Plus Medispa’s cosmetic consultation to which we adhere; we aim for a natural look, only use the best possible products, we work within the patients budget and we use a layer cake technique, this means we use a small amount of different modalities, rather than just one.
Dr Mooney will assess your full medical history, discuss treatments you have had in the past and your concerns.
After listening to a patients concerns we look at their skin texture, quality and youthfulness and then we look at blemishes, capillaries, face volume, shape and whether filling or lifting is indicated. Finally, Dr Mooney will discuss more advanced techniques such as formal surgery, PRP, thread lifting and laser.
It is important to make an accurate treatment plan with the patients desires and a natural look in mind. At the fore front, we give patients realistic outcome expectations and a time frame to see the changes being fulfilled.
Dr William Mooney will then discuss treatment planning, risks and complications.
We encourage a cooling off period before patients consider cosmetic restitution and welcome multiple consultations before we enact our treatment plan.
At our subsequent consult, we discuss the finer details and don’t move forward until the patient and doctor are fully appraised and happy with the plan.

You must be over the age of 18 or have parental consent with presence. There are different treatment modalities that are appropriate for different ethnicities, sexes and age groups.
Aging changes become universally apparent in your mid 30’s. That said, Dr Mooney firmly believes in a less is more ethos in his practice.
If patients are unsure for example of filler treatment outcomes, we can do digital imaging in 3D using VECTRA technology and we can also use a saline solution as a temporary filler which approximates the hyaluronic acid (HA) outcome quite accurately. It is perfectly safe and lasts about 10 minutes or so, enough time to feel, touch and take a selfie of potential lips, cheeks, chin or other filled facial area.

No medical treatment is without side effects.
Pain, bruising and bleeding are all possible.
Ischemia (due to vessel occlusion) is a super rare but important complication to recognise. Should this occur we have the appropriate treatment regime set up to treat immediately.
Universally, dissatisfaction with the outcome is the number one problem that cosmetic injectors have and Dr Mooney is meticulous to avoid this complication in his practice with on point, pre-procedure planning.
No, pain is not a significant feature. We use ice, local anaesthetic cream (numbing cream) and gas for a comfortable patient experience. Most injectables have local anaesthetic in them, numbing the area in the first injection.

This is often a good time to perform the fillers, especially in sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth.
There are a few things that make us bruise more easily; smoking, fish oil, blood thinning products and intercurrent illnesses.
That is why we encourage a cooling off period (not legally required) between consult and procedure, this will allow time to modify diet, behaviour and introduce medication to optimise outcome.
In a filler procedure, patients will be swollen with possible bruising but usually resolves very quickly.
Injectables usually last between three to six months. Sometimes it comes down to age, volume and type of filler/muscle relaxant. Patients are seen to metabolise the product faster if they smoke, exercise heavily and some other rare conditions such as hyperthyroidism, that may shorten the life span of the injected product.
Semi-permanent fillers last between three and six months and there are permanent options for fillers. Muscle relaxants will last between three and six months.
