The risks of surgery are those general to surgery such as pain, bleeding, infection and anaesthetic risks. All surgery carries the potential risk of severe outcome including death. Specific to each surgery are particular risks such as not achieving the desired functional or cosmetic outcome and issues with scarring. The need for consideration of revision surgery is always a possibility. For example, on an audit of his surgical outcomes for rhinoplasty over 10 years, Dr Mooney performed revision surgery on 5% of his first-time noses, and up to 20% of his revision noses. Patients need to be reaslistic about outcome expectations, and Dr Mooney and his team are very clear on discussing these and other specific risks at the time of your consultation.
